“The WBO was rushing.” Lapin Explains Why Usyk Vacated the Title

Director of three-time undisputed world champion Oleksandr Usyk’s team, Serhii Lapin, explained why the boxer left the WBO title vacant instead of facing mandatory challenger Fabio Wardley.

“Oleksandr vacated the title because the WBO was rushing.

He decided to give the younger generation a chance,” said Lapin.

Earlier, Usyk himself said the belt was important to him, but he had too little time to rest and recover — after going through demanding camps for two fights with Tyson Fury and a bout with Daniel Dubois. Wardley is now the full champion, receiving that status after Usyk vacated.

Oleksandr has stated that he wants Deontay Wilder to be his next opponent.
